CNN Health and The Atlantic both picked up a big, new study done at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and published in the Archives of Internal Medicine that reports acupuncture’s effectiveness. In a meta-analysis of 18,000 patients from 29 studies, acupuncture was found to be successful in relieving back and neck pain, osteoarthritis, chronic headache, and shoulder pain.
The reason that this study is getting press is because 1) it is big, 2) it reviews randomized, controlled studies, and 3) reports are consistently good. For example, on a pain rating of 60 on a 100-point scale, follow-up scores decreased by half for those who received acupuncture. This translates into a 50 percent reduction in pain for the acupuncture patients – I’d take that !!!
