A Well Known Therapist Recounts Her Experience With Acupuncture

Well known psychologist Laura S. Brown, wrote about her healing experience with acupuncture in the Psychology of Women Quarterly.

In the fall of 1987, Laura Brown lost her voice.  As a singer and a speaker, she had had voice troubles before but this laryngitis, which came on shortly after her return from the American Psychological Association Convention did not seem to improve despite much tea, steam, lozenges, and days of silence; it only got worse. She saw an otolaryngologist who gave her a diagnosis of a focal dystonia, “Spasmodic Dysphonia,” with the frightening prognosis of her never being able to use her voice again. After that she looked into several alternative therapies and got treatment from an acupuncturist. In January of 1988, Laura began to get better and she credits this improvement largely to her acupuncture treatment. While her progress was not a straight line, with the help of acupuncture Dr. Brown had regained her public speaking voice by 1989.
